If you're learning to drive in Durham, Darlington, Sunderland, Newcastle or anywhere across the North East, there are some important changes to the driving test booking system that you need to be aware of.

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) has introduced new rules throughout 2026 designed to reduce test waiting times, prevent test slot reselling, and make the booking system fairer for everyone.

At Drive Automatic, we want to make sure our learners understand exactly what these changes mean and how they may affect your journey to passing your driving test.

1. You Can Only Change Your Driving Test Twice

Since 31 March 2026, learners can only make two changes to an existing driving test booking. This includes changing:

  • The test date
  • The test time
  • The test centre
  • Swapping with another learner

Once you've used your two changes, you'll need to cancel your test and make a completely new booking if you want to make further alterations.

Our Advice

Don't rush to book a practical test before you're genuinely close to test standard. A premature booking could leave you using valuable changes later when you're not quite ready.

2. Learners Must Book Their Own Driving Test

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking the test can book, change, cancel or swap a practical driving test. Driving instructors and driving schools can still help and advise, but the booking must be completed by the learner themselves.

This change has been introduced to tackle bots, unofficial booking services and individuals who were buying up test slots and reselling them for profit.

What This Means For Drive Automatic Learners

We can still:

  • Advise you when you're ready for test
  • Help you find suitable test dates
  • Explain the booking process
  • Prepare you thoroughly for test day

However, you'll need to complete the booking through the official GOV.UK service yourself.

3. Test Centre Changes Will Be Restricted

From 9 June 2026, learners can only move their driving test to one of the three nearest test centres to their original booking location.

Previously, some learners booked tests hundreds of miles away simply to secure an earlier date and then moved the booking to their preferred test centre later. The DVSA believes this contributed to long waiting times and unfair access to tests.

Why This Matters

If you're planning to take your test at:

  • Durham Test Centre
  • Darlington Test Centre
  • Sunderland Test Centre
  • Gosforth Test Centre

it's more important than ever that you book your preferred location from the start.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

The DVSA is trying to tackle the ongoing driving test backlog and stop abuse of the booking system by bots, third-party resellers and unofficial booking services. The aim is to make test bookings fairer and ensure genuine learner drivers have a better chance of securing appointments.
