The new online resource introduces a structured learning journey built around 27 essential driving skills, helping learners understand exactly what they need to master before taking their practical driving test.

The 27 Driving Skills

2. Control and Positioning
Learning smooth clutch control (or accelerator control in an automatic), steering, moving away safely and maintaining correct road position.
3. Observation, Signalling and Planning
Using mirrors correctly, anticipating hazards, signalling effectively and planning well ahead.
4. Junctions, Roundabouts and Crossings
Safely approaching, assessing and dealing with junctions, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings.
5. Manoeuvres
Including:
- Parallel parking
- Bay parking
- Pulling up on the right and reversing
- Emergency stop
6. Different Road Types
Driving safely on:
- Country roads
- Dual carriageways
- Motorways
7. Driving Conditions
Learning to cope with:
- Night driving
- Poor weather
- Carrying passengers and loads
8. Independent Driving
Following sat nav directions and road signs confidently without instructor guidance.
The New 5-Level Progress System
One of the biggest improvements is the introduction of a structured progress tracker.
Every driving skill progresses through five stages:
Level 1 – Introduced
Your instructor demonstrates and explains the skill.
Level 2 – Helped
You can complete the skill with regular assistance.
Level 3 – Prompted
You can usually do it yourself but occasionally need reminders.
Level 4 – Independent
You complete the skill confidently without prompts.
Level 5 – Reflection
You understand not only how to complete the skill, but why it makes you a safer and more fuel-efficient driver.
The DVSA says learners should consistently achieve Level 5 across all 27 skills before taking their driving test.
How Do You Know You’re Ready for Your Driving Test?
The DVSA’s official checklist says you’re usually ready when you can answer yes to all five questions:
✅ You no longer need prompts from your instructor.
✅ You don’t make serious or dangerous mistakes.
✅ You can consistently pass mock driving tests.
✅ You’ve practised managing driving test nerves.
✅ Your instructor agrees you’re ready.

Driving test waiting times are still longer than anyone would like.
The DVSA wants learners to book their practical test when they are genuinely ready, helping to:
